TRAINING: I lift weights every morning, and then do an intense workout in the evening.
When and why did you start training for fighting? I had seen the UFC but I never really thought I would compete in it. A buddy got me into it and then I started doing some small shows and it led to this. I never thought I would get into it but it seems to be whatever I get into athletically I do pretty well.
What ranks and titles have you held? Two-time UFC World Welterweight Champion. Two-time state champion at Hillsboro High School, a High School All-American, and a four-time collegiate All American at Lincoln Community College and Eastern Illinois University. Middleweight Advanced Champion at the 2002 Grapplers Quest West Championships (2/23/02). Was a coach on the Ultimate Fighter, seasons two and six.
Do you have any heroes? Pat Miletich and Dan Gable.
What is your favorite technique? Any type of grappling.
What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? I’m a competitor, I’m 34 years old, and I still love to compete. Every time I get in that Octagon I have a good time and it will be more than a year before I hang my shoes up and get out of this sport. I just love to compete.
Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? Associate of Arts Degree from Lincoln Community College.
What was your job before you started fighting? I was an electrician and I did construction and farming.
