Biografia

TRAINING: I get up and spend some time with my family, and read and do some visualization. Then I go do some form of conditioning: sprints, plyometrics, or fight specific conditioning. In the afternoon it’s wresting, jits, or sparring. I try to get mitts and bag work in every day also. Twice a week I'm in the pool for some swimming and breath control workouts. No injuries - all old injuries are healed up and when that's the case, good things happen. I’m looking forward to putting in a show in Canada.

When and why did you start training for fighting? I have been drawn to combat sports my entire life. My parents had us in more traditional sports to steer us from boxing, etc. But I found myself in a Professional NHB fight at 22 years old. I was playing college football at the time. After my fight, I dropped out of school, gave up my scholarship and dedicated myself to a life of mixed martial arts.

What ranks and titles have you held? None. I developed my own system of martial arts which has no ranks or belts - American Whu-Hitu. The only title I strive for is that of UFC welterweight champion.

Do you have any heroes? My Father because of his faith and ability to persevere.

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? I am proud to be in the UFC. It amounts to being at the top of my profession.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? Associates degree in the field of General Education while attending Dixie State College in St. George UT. I gave further education up to pursue a professional mixed martial arts career.

What was your job before you started fighting? College athlete

Specific accomplishments in amateur competition? All-American RB at Dixie State in my sophomore year of college. All-State in baseball, football, and wresting in HS

Favorite grappling technique: Slamming people

Favorite striking technique: Hitting them in the face

Thoughts on opponent, Patrick Cote? I like Cote and have a lot of respect for the guy and his career. We even had a few drinks a couple different times together back in the day. My thoughts on the fight are that I've yet to be able to perform at the level I'm capable of so far in the UFC because of a plethora of reasons...This is the first fight back that's I've been able to train all facets of the game. With a full camp and the ability to work in all aspects of the game, I'll be better than Cote in every area of the game. My concern is fighting a Canadian in Canada. I have to put Cote away; a decision will not cut it with Canadian judges. I know Cote comes to fight, and I will finish him.

• Was a JUCO All-American running back for Dixie State in 2001, rushing for over 1,400 yards and 13 touchdowns.

• Abandoned football and a scholarship at the University of Utah to pursue MMA.

• Fought and lost to Jeremy Horn in 2005 before going on The Ultimate Fighter’s second season.

• Known for his powerful slams

• Origin of nickname: “To stand up for the rights of others. Just been that way my entire life.”
