April 27 named Joseph Benavidez Day

Las Cruces, New Mexico will be extra festive today as the town celebrates Joseph Benavidez Day to honor the WEC bantamweight contender.

The holiday follows on the heels of last week's Urijah Faber Day, declared in Sacramento by mayor Kevin Johnson.

Las Cruces, New Mexico will be extra festive today as the town celebrates Joseph Benavidez Day to honor the WEC bantamweight contender.

The holiday follows on the heels of last week's Urijah Faber Day, declared in Sacramento by mayor Kevin Johnson. Faber and Benavidez are teammates in Sacramento.

WHEREAS, Joseph Benavidez has become a recognized force in the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Arena, with a professional record of  9 Wins, 1 Loss, 0 Draws; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Benavidez attended Las Cruces High School and wrestled varsity for four years between 1999 and 2002; and

WHEREAS, in 2000, Joseph Benavidez became the State Wrestling Champion of New Mexico during his sophomore year; and

WHEREAS, in his latest fight, Joseph Benavidez upset former World Extreme Cage fighting (WEC) bantamweight champion Miguel Torres; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Benavidez is now ranked 2nd lightweight in the World in Mixed Martial Arts Competition; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Benavidez, at the age of 25, has made his mark in MMA and we look forward to watching what great achievements are yet to come in his career.

NOW THEREFORE, We, the Mayor and City Council of the City of Las Cruces, do hereby proclaim, April 27, 2010 as:

“JOSEPH BENAVIDEZ DAY IN LAS CRUCES”
