UFC 200: Tate vs Nunes main card
Main event UFC women’s bantamweight title fight: Amanda Nunes defeats Miesha Tate
In a shocking upset, Amanda Nunes won the UFC women’s bantamweight championship in a destructive submission finish against Miesha Tate. The fight was stopped at 3:16 of the first round after Nunes shot off 40 significant strikes, battering the face of Tate before sinking in a rear naked choke to force Tate to tap. Nunes becomes the fourth undisputed women’s bantamweight champion and caps off International Fight Week with another first round finish in a title fight. Eddie Alvarez captured the lightweight title in a first-round finish of Rafael Dos Anjos on Thursday.

Amanda Nunes: “I always have things to work on and try to make things happen in my life. Miehsa’s a tough opponent. Everybody knows that. I respect Miesha a lot and I’m the new champion. For years I’ve been working hard for this moment. I feel amazing. I’m going to go back to Brazil and visit my family. Now I’m going back to Brazil and bringing this belt with me. … When I saw she was hurt, I controlled myself because I know she can come back. I made sure she couldn’t come back anymore."
Miesha Tate: “She’s a very fast starter, very dangerous in the first round and she caught me. Amanda is a very dangerous fighter. I made some mistakes. I got careless and it cost me big. … Right now I’m going regroup for a week and then I’ll be back in the gym. I always come back stronger."
Co-main: Brock Lesnar defeats Mark Hunt
Brock Lesnar returned in spectacular fashion, putting on a wrestling show against No. 8-ranked Mark Hunt, and securing the unanimous decision win (29-27, 29-27, 29-27). The Beast landed 51 significant strikes after a combined four takedowns, controlling eight minutes of the 15-minute fight. Hunt was only able to manage 13 significant strikes against Lesnar in the fight.

Brock Lesnar: “It took me a little while to get acclimated. Words can’t even describe it. Thanks, everybody. Thanks so much. … I want to take it one day at a time. I’m so happy to be in here. … America, shoutout to the men and women in uniform that protect this country, from sea to shining sea, from one white boy to all nationalities. We’ve got to stand together, people."
Mark Hunt: “I’m disappointed, but it happens, man. I need to work on my fitness."
Daniel Cormier defeats Anderson Silva
Daniel Cormier, likely with a heavy heart after original opponent Jon Jones was removed from their title fight, defeated replacement Anderson Silva by unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-26). Silva had a few moments in the fight but it was the king of the grind who ultimately was able to implement his game plan and wrestler the Muay Thai former champ en route to the victory.
They said it:
Daniel Cormier: “Hats off to Anderson. I got him with some good elbows early and landed some hard shots, but he just kept going. It’s a dangerous fight anytime you face Anderson. This is a big accomplishment for me. I appreciate the UFC for getting me this fight. I’m a happy man. … I’m going to go back to work on TV. I haven’t done that for a while. I also want to take my family on vacation. I’ll just wait to see what happens between Glover Teixeira and Anthony Johnson."
Anderson Silva: “With Jon Jones not getting to fight tonight — a fight he trained so hard for and that I have no doubt he would’ve won — I did what I had to do. I only had one day to train, but I did this for my team and for my family. At this point in my life, I just want to be happy. I will take any big fight at 185 or 205 that is offered to me.”
Interim UFC featherweight title bout: Jose Aldo defeats Frankie Edgar
In a showcase of dominant striking and footwork, former featherweight champion Jose Aldo took the first step toward reclaiming his title as he won a unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47) against Frankie Edgar to become the interim featherweight title. Aldo landed 39 percent of his head strikes compared to just 19 percent for Frankie Edgar.

Jose Aldo: “I feel really good. This is one step to getting the belt back. The next time you’ll see me as the true champion.”
Cain Velasquez defeats Travis Browne
The bulldog in Cain Velasquez ran wild at UFC 200, landing 91 significant strikes in just under a round to finish Travis Browne by TKO at 4:47 of the first frame. Velasquez looked to be back in full health, throwing crazy wheel kicks and pushing the pace like the Velasquez of old. Cain earns his 12th win of his UFC career, tied for the third most in heavyweight history. That's also the 10th KO/TKO of his career, good for third all-time behind just Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort.

Cain Velasquez: “I’m never happy with what I have. My timing was a little off as far as being able to close the distance. Yeah, it’s good to get a win, but I always want to be better. It’s about improving on those little things as a fighter. That’s just the way I am. I want the winner of Stipe and Overeem. I’ve always said I want to fight the best guys out there."
UFC 200: Tate vs Nunes FS1 prelims
Julianna Pena defeats Cat Zingano
Juliana Pena picks up a workmanlike unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) win against Cat Zingano in the main event of the FS1 prelims. Zingano took the first round with a couple of takedowns and some ground and pound, but Pena responded in the final 10 minutes to control the fight and attack with a few submissions. Pena extends win streak to 4, which is tied for second best in the women's bantamweight division.
They said it:
Julianna Pena: “Sometimes I just let my opponents gas themselves out and do their thing. Then, I’ll come out in the second and the third where I know I’m my strongest and my cardio is the best. I’m just hitting my prime, I’m 26-years-old and I’m ready for more. Try me right now, bring it on, the world is mine. Everybody that’s been put in front of me I ‘ve beaten so I don’t see anything else but the title.”
Kelvin Gastelum defeats Johny Hendricks
Kelvin Gastelum showed significantly improved striking after his second full camp at King’s MMA and training with Rafael Cordeiro. KG was landing some punishing combos throughout the fight and his quickness was evident throughout. Gastelum did more than Hendricks and landed the bigger shots to earn the unanimous decision win (29-28, 30-27, 30-27).
They said it:
Kelvin Gastelum: “Oh man, it was a battle. I’m definitely feeling it now. At the end of the fight, we went with the moment and just gave it for the fans. This win puts me in the conversation to possibly fight for a No.1 contender spot. I’m in that conversation for sure. I didn’t really have a plan coming in here. I just prepared for anything that came my way. Anywhere the fight could go, I was prepared to defend and attack. I’ve never felt this level of confidence before during a fight. I’ve never felt this level of preparation."
Johny Hendricks: “I don’t know what the difference was. I landed shots. Maybe I need to grunt more when I throw. I’m sort of over fighting in Vegas; I love the people here, but man it is what it is. Kelvin was a good fighter, take nothing away from him. I have to pull back a little bit and then move forward.”
TJ Dillashaw defeats Raphael Assuncao
In his first fight since losing the UFC bantamweight title, TJ Dillashaw put on a striking clinic against Rafael Assuncao to avenge a loss to the Brazilian from three years ago. Dillashaw won the unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27). Dillashaw was quick and elusive, like always, and made his punches and kicks count. He bloodied up Assuncao by the start of the second round and finished with a significant strike advantage of 77-39. Assuncao had been out of action for 21 months and may have been a little rusty. Dillashaw has won five of his last six.
They said it:
TJ Dillashaw: “I’m the champion in the bantamweight division. That’s my belt. Cruz knows I won that fight, I want my belt back. I’m coming for that title. He better not be trying out for Dancing With The Stars again because I’m coming for you, Dominick. A title fight is next. Nothing but a title fight.”
Raphael Assuncao: “I think the takedowns made the difference. I’m not going to make any excuses. He came with a good strategy. I think I improved a lot since we last fought. I stopped most of his takedowns, but he had the edge in some of the finer details. I have no idea who I’ll fight next. I do want to get right back in there. I feel that I’m right near the top. TJ is obviously the former champion and he’s the No. 1 guy. I felt like I was right in there. For my next fight, I’ll be even better."
Sage Northcutt defeats Enrique Marin
There were moments where Sage Northcutt struggled, but that’s to be expected for a 20-year-old in just his ninth pro fight. In the end Northcutt did enough to capture the unanimous decision win (29-28, 29-28, 29-28). Northcutt was in huge trouble in the second round when Marin applied a perfect armbar that extended Northcutt. But Sage was able to roll and withstand the pain and break out of the hold to keep the fight going. Marin landed 4 takedowns in the fight but wasn’t able to do much with them, as Sage out-struck Marin 41-16 in significant strikes.
They said it:
Sage Northcutt: “I’m always learning and getting better with my technique. I’m still very young, so I have a lot to learn. His jiu jitsu is pretty good, but none of the submissions he went for bugged me or hurt. I know my tendons are pretty strong, so they didn’t affect me at all. Any time he was on top, he wasn’t doing any damage. He never threw any strikes. He was just trying to hold me. When I reversed him, I was doing the most damage. I had the most significant strikes and never really got hit by him. Whenever the UFC wants me to fight again, I’m ready. I’ll be excited."

Joe Lauzon defeats Diego Sanchez
Joe Lauzon became the first person to finish Diego Sanchez with strikes when he won by TKO at only 1:26 of the very first round. It wa s aleft hook that rocked Sanchez and Lauzon stayed calm and didn’t go crazy, landing consistent big punches as Sanchez tried to scurry out of trouble. By the end, “The Nightmare” could barely stay on his feet and the ref had to stop the fight. Lauzon earns his 12th career finish which is good for fifth most in UFC history.
They said it:
Joe Lauzon: “It was a short fight, but things went our way. I think in the past I’ve tried to do too long of a camp so we shortened it quite a bit and sparred a lot less. Plan A was that he comes barreling at us, throwing punches and to hit him with a right hand, but he came out and was kind of tentative. I was a little more cautious, I thought he was trying to draw me in a little bit since he was a little complacent.”
Gegard Mousasi defeats Thiago Santos
Gegard Mousasi landed a right upper cut as Thiago Santos was trying to stand up after spending a minute or so on his back and he was basically out on his feet. Mousasi landed a few more shots before the referee could save Santos and award the TKO win to Mousasi at 4:32 of the first round. Mousasi wins his fourth fight in his last five and puts an end to a four-fight win streak for Santos, who took the fight on short notice to step in for injured Derek Brunson.
They said it:
Gegard Mousasi: “I knew I had better hands than him because he’s a good kickboxer — he kicks a lot. I felt if I could take him down, I would dominate him on the ground. I felt the same way about my standup and obviously I got it done with the strikes. I wanted to show my dominance in my striking and impose my will on him so he wouldn’t build confidence. UFC had a show recently in Rotterdam and the atmosphere was great. I know for sure the UFC will go back at some point and I want to be a part of that show."
Thiago Santos: “We’re going to have to go back, sit down, do the homework and analyze what went wrong then see what the future is. Tonight, he was better than me and that’s all I can say right now.”
Jim Miller defeats Takanori Gomi
Jim Miller flattened Takanori Gomi out after dropping him with a punch and managed to land a barrage of bombs before the referee stopped the fight. Miller wins by TKO at 2:18 of the very first round to kick off the UFC FIGHT PASS prelims. The win is the 15th of Miller’s career in the UFC, which is tied for second all-time with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Miller also becomes the first person to win at both UFC 100 and 200 (Miller beat Mac Danzig by unanimous decision at UFC 100).
They said it:
Jim Miller: “It’s big for me to have earned a win at both UFC 100 and 200. It’s another notch in the belt. I’ve been around for a while but haven’t really accomplished what I set out to do. I’m capable of doing it and getting the win at UFC 100 and 200, they’re just extra feathers in the cap. I’ve been feeling really good and able to get back to form. My last couple fights I didn’t really fight the way I normally do and what got me here and I think I’ve got everything figured out. I’m feeling a lot better and it’s easier to be aggressive.”
