Q&A
When and why did you start training for fighting? Since I left the Parachute Regiment of the British Army in 2010. I had no background in fighting. I was getting out of control and losing my way. My best friend pulled me to one side and said if I carry on the way I’m going I’m going end up in prison. So he suggested I try MMA. I went along to a session where I met my BJJ coach Neto. That class I got my arse kicked by a younger kid at the time, which made me realize that I ain’t s**t and that if I am a father I need to be able to defend myself. I went home that weekend told my football team this is my last game as I’m going to become a fighter in the UFC one day. I went out and played that game and dislocated my knee!!! I then spent nine months on the sidelines. However, I was that hooked on MMA that I went along to every session with my friend to watch it so I can take it in. After nearly a year, I was able to jump on the mat. I told myself from Day One I will commit and not stop until I am at the top.
What ranks and titles have you held? I am a BJJ brown belt, and I don’t not hold any MMA titles. However, I was offered a few regional tittle shots but I didn’t want to fight for them as titles at that level were something to feed your ego and I always wanted my first title fight to be for a world championship. So I guess my first ever title shot will be for a UFC title…and that’s the one that really matters.
Do you have any heroes? I don’t really have heroes. I loved watching Anderson Silva fight, and as an MMA fighter, him and BJ Penn are people I admired.
What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? Everything. It’s taken me 10 years to achieve a dream. It’s so important for me to get here as now my son, who has been here for the whole journey, has seen the sacrifices I’ve made and that all the hard work and dedication does pay off. I know that my fans that have followed my journey of my struggle will take strength from this news and it will inspire them too that they can achieve their dreams if they work hard at it. First rule...always believe in yourself.
What was your job before you started fighting? I was in the Elite Parachute Regiment of the British Army.
Specific accomplishments in amateur competition? Was unbeaten as amateur but had a short career at amateur.
