When and why did you start training for fighting? I started training at 16. I started because I was always a fan of martial arts movies and animes like Dragon Ball Z. And I want to say Power Rangers had me fighting imaginary bad guys from a young age. So, as a slightly overweight teenager I realized through some street fights and backyard boxing that my key to get the respect I desired so much was my fighting ability. So I was all in. I trained hard for two years, had my first amateur Muay Thai fight at 18, I won by TKO and have been grinding ever since.
What titles have you held? I've won regional titles in Colorado and Hawaii. I won the USMTA amateur Tri State Championship.
Do you have any heroes? Chief Lapu Lapu is a Filipino hero who killed Magellan at the Battle of Mactan
What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? I've dedicated so much of my life to fighting. A UFC contract means everything to my family and me. We pass the UFC PI and the UFC APEX daily. My youngest son Kennedy is always pointing, asking to go. I'm trying to set an example for him and his older brothers Evander and Lexander. And my girlfriend Linda who has supported my dream since day one. She’s my most diehard fan, my biggest supporter. It means so much to us to get this contract.
What was your job before you started fighting? I started teaching fitness Muay Thai and kids’ classes at 18 and eventually got more invested in coaching. But over the years I've worked different jobs on the side. I've gone steady at some restaurants. I have also done a lot of side gigs. Driver for a film crew. Helped out a few home remodels. And spent some time in the glazing trade. Spent a couple years installing alarms and camera systems. All these opportunities came from the fight community.
Specific accomplishments in amateur competition: 6-1 in amateur Muay Thai, 4-1 in amateur MMA, all TKOs.
Specific accomplishments in pro competition: Won 185 championship at War on the Valley Isle. Maui, Hawaii. Won 185 championship against UFC vet Shonie Carter at Golden Fights Cage Wars in Colorado.
Ranks in any martial arts styles: Purple belt in Jiu-jitsu
Favorite grappling technique: My favorite grappling technique is the armbar. I have a few different ways that I set them up from a variety of top positions.
Favorite striking technique: Muay Thai has so many techniques I like but I'd have to say I really love sweeping and tripping people.
